BEWARE- Scammers attacking artists!!!!

topic posted Thu, October 13, 2005 - 8:05 AM by  Gabriela
Hi there!

Has anyone received these type of emails lately? I have been contacted by 4 of them in the past few months (two this month) How can I tell it's a scam?? They usually have the following criteria:

- They offer to pay more than I'm asking for
- They live is Africa or Europe (the one I got was from UK)
- They have terrible grammar, spelling & lack of punctuation.
- They want to use their own shipping agent, so they don't send any contact information even if you ask them to.
- They are very complimentary of your work, ex. this 'lady' said she was 'impressed by my artwork and wanted to buy some to beautify her new home in Sweden'.... I mean, nice compliment but... c'mon!!!!
- They want you to send them your address so they can send you a money order, again they don't give theirs.

It is especified on my website that I need their complete contact information so I could procces their order. They just completely ignore these guidelines!

Hopefully nobody will fall for these!

Gaby :)

An artist friend of mine got an email like this offering to purchase her sculpture. It was supposed to be for an overseas hotel where the "manager" was very impressed with her work. At first it seemed legit, but a couple of emails back and forth trying to clarify certain points and she realized it was a complete scam. I think that she reported it to some type of fraud alert or something and verified that it was a con.

I'm glad you didn't fall for it. Artists have to be careful. We are so eager to sell out work, and that eagerness can be a tool for con artists to use against us. Thanks for posting this and trying to get the word out.

it's simple. if you think they're frauds, don't reply. if you want to test their credibility, reply and tell them thye must purchase using your criteria, i.e, they must pay you in advance for the work and shipping/handling costs via international money order. have them mail it to a p.o. box . if you get a valid money order for the full amount, then ship them the work.
if they keep trying to get you to do it their way and seem suspicious, report them to the FBI.

        Subject: art order................
        Date: November 30, 2005 6:57:30 PM CST
        To: myemail@mywebsite.com

Hello, I am mr Roy Kennedy, I am interested in some of your arts here in asia for some exhibition. I will also like you to know i intend paying you for this arts with a certified check. As soon as i get the actual price for the items i will like to buy, i will order my client to send you payment immediately. I will also like you to know that the check will also include the funds for shipping, so what you are going to do is as soon as you receive and clear the check from bank, you are to get back to my reliable shipper with the excess funds so that he can use in arranging for a pick up right from your resident. I will also need you to get back with your information where payment will be sent. Get back with your official website also for proper choosing of items and let me know if i can trust you with the excess funds for shippment to be sent to my shipper. I await your response.

Sounds suspicious to me... especially with a Yahoo email address. Do all exhibitons use Yahoo?

Any ridiculous offer from someone offering to pay with a "Certified Check" or money order is a 409 scam.

As much as I distrust the gov't, I dislike these bastards even more. You can report them here : www1.ifccfbi.gov/index.asp

Does anyone know where to report credit card fraud? Recently a charge for a bogus magazine subscription from NSS Magazine Outlet appeared on one of our credit cards (one we never use). Come to find out this is a huge scam, affecting many people.

We called the credit card company and no longer have to pay for it. But I was thinking we should contact some sort of law enforccement about it. I'm wondering how the same place can still be in operation, since there seems to be so many fraud complaints online about them.

I talked to someone that went along and too the check. It came back counterfeit (SURPRISE!) and Wester Union told them to take it to the police. Needless to say, the cops couldn't care less, and it went nowhere.
Are some people foolish enough to send their art BEFORE cashing the check? I mean, what's the scam here?

Anyone have any experience with them?

I received an email last Friday from a representative of World Art Media. I was immediately skeptical so I googled them, combining their name with the word "scam" (always a good practice).

Two notable threads about this organization:

    www.artspan.com/forums/read.php

    www.atelier-rc.com/Atelier....nues.html

    Apparently, they also go by:

    450 Broadway Gallery
    NYArts Magazine
    Berliner Kunstprojekt

I think they are also affiliated with World Art Media Television (WAMTV).

It appears they are a real entity, but it seems to be a pay-to-play type thing (i.e., a so-called vanity gallery). I decided to email them, to see what happened. Eventually, their representative stated they would like $700 to show 2-3 pieces for two weeks.

    Dude.

The ehibition she says she saw my work at is a very old show, my first group exhibtion outside of school (in northern California). World Art Media is in NYC. Very unlikely.

Online research flags her original email as a form letter, one that has been sent under many different names with the content unchanged for years.

Following is the communication back and forth between us:

i've gotten the same basic info from raluca corjan. my response was: "i strictly work with agents and galleries on a commission basis." short and sweet.

BY THE WAY FOLKS...I'M ACTIVELY SEEKING LEGIT GALLERIES, ANYONE GOT LEADS ANYWHERE IN THE COUNTRY? small, yet enlightened towns would be my preference. i'm definitely NOT trying to show in soho or chelsea! too many vanity galleries down there!

Hi everyone. Came across this discussion via Google. Just to let you guys know that WAMtv worldart.com is a TV channel from the UK for Artists. We are not connected in the slightest with the mentioned US people. Unfortunately we do have a similar name, as in, Worldart Media Television Ltd.
We show artists work from around the world and never charge anything at all to them.
        Hope this clarifies :)

ITS TRUE I received a check for seven thousand dollars from one of these Nigerians. I was supposed to cash it at my bank and send them most of it back so they could "release" the rest of the high payment to me. Bullshit, I called the florida bank the check came from and they said it was not one of theirs. They want you to cash it, it will take several weeks to clear, send that money to them and they pull a casper the unfriendly ghost and several weeks later your bank wants their money back, and U the artist becomes stuck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You should frame the check and hang it on tthe wall! In fact I'd love to see an art show of scam checks- artist could reel in the scammers, get the checks, then frame 'em up and have a show, along with some information about the scam practice to spread the information around, so people don't fall for it.

        hahahaha...

reminds me of that story in the big café in st.germain where picasso got hassled by the waiter for not paying but then pablo pointed to a doodle on a napkin at which point the waiter was really happy and asked pablo to sign it but pablo says "I want to pay for the meal not buy the restaurant"...

anyway that story somehow became a strategy artists supposedly tried to get free stuff with in that they would draw on cheques and hope they wouldn't get cashed because people would want to keep the artwork...

the relationship between art and money is still crucial and mysterious somewhere down the line... BoP

Good idea about the check. Actually I kept it front and present in my studio for almost a year hoping that its energy, for good/bad would attract more sales, and it did. Till finally a women told me to rip it up as she felt it was bad energy. So I did, but not before I took a digital pic of it for posterity. Hey Ezra we should become tribe friends. peace, Scott.
