Re: SYMBOLISTS ANYONE ?
Fri, December 21, 2007 - 6:06 PMI agree.
somehow there seems more "substance"or content in their works than the surrealists who seemed to capitalize most frequently on special effects...
Sometimes they transcended two genres;Ferdinand Khnopff comes to mind.
He is as often listed as a Symbolist as he is in the Art Nouveau Genre... -

Re: SYMBOLISTS ANYONE ?
Fri, December 21, 2007 - 6:14 PMYou have good taste Stephen .
Ferdinand Knopff is the Man ! He is one swell cat !
Nestor the Spanish symbolist is mind blowing also . I think I'll post a link to ' Poem Of the Atlantic ' next . -

Re: SYMBOLISTS ANYONE ?
Fri, December 21, 2007 - 7:45 PMThank you Jason,
I grew up on the coast of Maine and my father was a fairly well known sculptor.
I was always aware of whatever art and artists were vacationing or had moved to that beautiful state.
The Wyeths had summer residences on one of the islands off the coast, and I would often see their work around, especially Jamie's who had a great strength with watercolors. I always compared his work with Knopff seeing a correspondence in the muted earth tones paired with a crisp almost hyper focus... -
-
Re: SYMBOLISTS ANYONE ?
Fri, December 21, 2007 - 8:40 PMHello Stephen ,
Maine is where my friends Garrett and Siri live who are quite amazing musicians .
Yes, until now I had not thought of the parallels between Wyeth and Ferdinand Knopff , but come to think of it there are parallels . The parallels in the muted earth tomes coipled with crisp hyper focus are quite similar .
Howard Pyle, who , if memory serves rightly , knew the Wyeths , was good also . -

Re: SYMBOLISTS ANYONE ?
Fri, December 21, 2007 - 10:30 PMMore than knew them...
Howard Pyle mentored N.C.Wyeth who mentored Andrew Wyeth who mentored Jamie Wyeth...
One of the most enduring legacies of American art talent.
Fraught with eccentricities however.
Jamie summered on Monhegan Island where my cousin was a school teacher.
He used to paint on site but in a big cardboard box because he didn't like people looking over his shoulder... -

Re: SYMBOLISTS ANYONE ?
Sat, December 22, 2007 - 11:19 AMI agree. I absolutely loved surrealism until I discovered symbolism... There's not only 'substance', but the technique/style seems a bit more refined, still drawing from the more traditional styles of the time.
And one reason I love their work is that it wasn't necessarily a specific style or genre - "more a philosophy than an actual style of art"
I've always liked Jan Toorop's symbolist work:

One by Khnopff, one by Toorop: Almost seems like they were working from the same model :)

Re: SYMBOLISTS ANYONE ?
Sat, December 22, 2007 - 12:35 PMThat woman painted by Knopff was his sister, whom he used as a model frequently.
How many dreams I've had of her visage...I care not to admit. -

How can you gauge interest?
I would think it's not so much how they are more interesting than others, but more simply, what makes them interesting? -

Re: Another Khnopff
Mon, January 21, 2008 - 6:58 PMSpeaking generally, perhaps that statement sort of reflects the general nature of the Symbolists in their exploring more archetypal themes in a more literal manner, therefore making them - possibly - far more appoachable and understandable to a general viewing public than the Surrealists - which might be a little or lot less accessible to the general viewer.
?
I heart the Surrealists as well.

How the symbolists differ from surrealists
Mon, January 21, 2008 - 7:24 PMTrue, more interest in quantity by being more accessible.I imagine the archetypal symbolism also felt familiar to contemporary audiences, myths and legends, wood sprites and fairies, an interest in the fanciful, the supernatural, all polished up in familiar terms.
The surrealists--dreams, chance, contradiction, anarchy and madness, being less accessible to contemporary audiences, yet enough to frighten, disgust and amuse, but more demanding of what one thinks is proper.
The symbolists' ornate beauty being a pritine illustration of what might lay hidden in the mystic forest.
The surrealists, running existential madmen running wild in the dark of the forest. I find the surrealists to be frightening and disturbing. The symbolists verge on illustration, which is cool. I love a well-crafted object. -

Tue, January 22, 2008 - 1:23 AMThat was indeed a wonderful mask Kimowan,
thank you for the link.
Here are two examples of my own in a similar vein, though perhaps strictly speaking ,my "Ophelia" is Art Nouveau and only my "Neriad"would be deemed Symbolist...

Re: How the symbolists differ from surrealists
Tue, January 22, 2008 - 8:02 AMBy the way, I read your quiz answers on your profile page. It was really, really funny. And I think a large part of the appeal for the Knopff mask is the way it's photographed: dead center with even light. Isn't it a beaut? It seems so lovingly touched. And, painted plaster! Sculpting that must have been so much fun. All you need is a chunk of plaster, a few tools from the back of the drawer and sandpaper. Dusty, though. (and brittle, yikes!) You can really tell that someone cared. In a way, I think that's where the surrealists broke away. The emphasis on care shifted from craftsmanship to the idea. I mean Dali was an extraordinary painter, but most surealists did whatever they could to get by. Miro was a brilliant colorist. Ernst, Magritte, Tanguy, Arp, all so-so painters in pursuit of big ideas, picked up easier by writers like Breton and Bataille and the handful of surrealist journals of that time, mostly between the wars. Jeezus. Sorry, I'm on my third cup o' java. Makes me yappy. -

Re: How the symbolists differ from surrealists
Tue, January 22, 2008 - 7:38 PMI agree with you on most of that ,
and I'm really glad you singled out Dali because he was a REALLY extraordinary painter ,far and away the best of all the surrealists with the brush... -

Re: How the symbolists differ from surrealists
Tue, January 22, 2008 - 8:19 PMI have just come back from seeing the Dali Museum in Figueres, Spain.
Nothing could have prepared me for the creativity and the dreamlike art that I saw there.
I also got to walk through his home in Port LLigat and see his surroundings first hand.
A truly inspiring experience.

Re: How the symbolists differ from surrealists
Wed, January 23, 2008 - 7:05 AMS, how cool. He was such an interesting man, along with the mysterious Gala.
I have often seen his last supper painting, I think at the Met or was it MoMA. It hangs in a stairway, I remember that.
